Justin Gras immigrated to Shreveport from France in 1891 to work in his uncle’s grocery store. At the time, he did not speak a word of English and had only five cents in his pocket. Through hard work and determination, overtime he would become one of Shreveport’s largest property owners and most benevolent citizens. The estate of Justin Gras, valued at his death in 1959 at $2.3 million, provided the cornerstone for The Community Foundation and continues to support the local community today. In 2010, for example, more than $110,000 was awarded to organizations in the Shreveport area from the Gras’ funds.
